Cancer is this thing that according to the NHS can affect one in three of us…. It’s this thing/disease that can start out as cells in a specific part of your body and if not caught can spread to other areas of the body. This is a disease, in my eyes and experience that is not always easy to diagnose. Medical professionals can pass of your symptoms as something else. Which happened to hubby, he was treated for Gastric issues and IBS…. Luckily for hubby due to continuing to return to the doctor his cancer was caught and has not spread to other organs however it has spread to a lymph node. For some individuals they may take the doctors word, so by the time this life changing disease has been diagnosed it may be to late. Only very recently we lost a special person to this disease, he was much older then hubby and he had cancer in other organs.
Like my hubby he had bowel cancer as well as lung and one other cancer. He did have chemo and was a very brave man but I believe he had lost his fight and he decided it was his time.
There are over 200 hundred different types of cancer according to the NHS and bowel cancer is the 4th most common cancer with breast being the first. Its crap that my best friend and soul mate had to be one of those that had to be affected by this thing!!! He continually says as long as you and the kids don’t get it then its ok.
This thing causes his emotions and moods to be so up and down it gets hard to deal with sometimes. Sometimes he can be snappy and bite my head off for the most silly thing but omg!!!!, I am so proud of him. He takes each day as it comes and stays strong as new things are chucked at us. Yes he has his moments, we both do….. But we are strong for each other when needed. He tells me that he could not of got this far with out me but I don’t believe him, yes I have been there for him but at the same time I feel I could have done so much more.
Cancer is life changing, it’s a disease that does not just impact the individual it impacts the family as well. Unless you have been through it, you will never in a million years understand what we as a family are going through. Cancer is something that you can’t accept over night, or even over a few days. I will hold my hands up and admit that I don’t think I will ever be able to except it. You have absolutely no idea the impact that it will have on you on a daily basis until it happens. The impact can vary from day to day some more so then others. Someone said to me that I will get stronger as the days go on but I never believed them, I mean come on someone I love has cancer!!!!! How do you get stronger as the days go on???? However I can relate, you do get stronger as the days go on, but it’s a journey of emotions and is mentally draining for me as well as hubby with so many up’s and down’s.
One huge impact cancer has had on me apart from seeing my best friend deteriorate with his health was all the driving I had to do the week hubby was in hospital and while he was recovering from the major operation. I can drive, but I’m not the most confident individual and by the weekend of hubby being in hospital all the driving along with everything else had made me physically exhausted. Cancer does not just mess you up mentally, it messes you up physically and I had no idea just how much until the week hubby had his operation. It is more so hard as my hubby is young fit and healthy, he is an ex solider and has always been a sporty and active individual that has watched what he ate (Apart from the bacon sarnies on the weekends). Cancer screws you up, you can be happy one minute and angry the next.
You can be having cuddles one minute and at each other’s throats the next. I used to wake up in the morning with the determination I was going to go and do some bits in town and have some me time, and yet when it came to it I would go in to town but could not be assed so never did what I set out to do. I could sometimes end up with a text or phone call as well with bad news.
Some days you could be busy with not a care in the world and not have a single thought about this disease, then out of the blue it slaps you in the face and you can break!!!!
Sometimes in life you have to take a step back and look at what you have and what is around you. There is always someone worse off then you, but you will never see or believe it if someone ever said it to you, you have to take a step back and see it for yourself. As time go’s by things change for example ‘research for cancer has resulted in many new drugs as well as treatments like chemo’ At the last appointment to talk about hubby’s chemo, we was told that years ago if you had to have chemo then you would have had it for anything up to a year.
Through hubby doing his vlogs he has come across someone on social media that has gone through the same chemo that he has been offered. She was told her treatment would be 6 months, but since starting her treatment her doctor has come across research that has suggested that 3 months of chemo would be the same as 6 months worth resulting in having the last cycle of treatment I believe this week.
Medicine is improving and changing all the time, research and tests for cancer happen on a daily basis, cancer is no longer in this modern day known as death. My hubby is going to be ok
he has had a major operation to remove the tumour, it just sucks that tests show it had spread to a lymph node resulting in needing chemo. However we are going to get through this together, as soon as hubby sorts out his bloody chemo treatment. ![]()
Cancer many years ago and still believed by many people to this current day is perceived as black and death. The same as the word Chemotherapy, which to me is as scary, word then Cancer. This is not the case anymore, there are many people that are surviving this c**p disease due to the advanced medicine. However as much as it is horrible to think there are still many people that don’t survive cancer. In 2014 alone in the UK according to “Cancer Research UK” 15,903 people never completed their journey with bowel cancer.
To enable this number to become lower, I believe it is so important to talk and spread the word about cancer. This is one of the reasons why I have been blogging about my journey, cancer needs to be spoken about. Not everyone believes what myself and hubby is doing, but that’s their opinion. We are trying to reach out and help and hopefully save people, if cancer can be prevented then it should be. If by me sharing my journey through an awful journey helps to support someone then I have achieved what I had set out to do.!!!!!
