Becoming a Wellness Mentor

Share Article

Becoming a Wellness Mentor is one of the best things I have ever done, it was anything but an easy decision to make though and totally out of my comfort zone.

For a few years I have been following some truly inspirational mentors on social media, sharing their wellness journeys including those days that you party until late and only chocolate and cake will do. I connected to one lady (Marta) who was later to become my wellness mentor. She had been following our cancer journey as a family, but we spoke about so much more. She would often mention about me joining her team, it sounded amazing, but it was just not me. Exercise was always something I avoided until a few years ago when I started going to Zumba classes, then life got in the way.

We often had conversations about me joining her team and I would follow her posts about joining. As much as I said no it was not for me, I found myself often having conversations about it and thinking about what it would be like being a mentor especially as I loved helping others. I suppose deep down I really wanted to give it ago but was scared.

In 2016 I completed my degree in Health and Social Care, I stepped out of my comfort zone and felt proud of myself. I soon felt knocked though as I received knock back after knock back from job applications. I took Christmas to spend time with my family, but life got in the way and I never went back to looking.

I started following mummy blogs on social media, seeing how they shared challenges they faced I felt inspired to give it ago. I started to share the challenges I faced searching for a job and being a mum, if I could help one mum or dad then ive achieved something. I had no idea that about 6 weeks later my page would grow to a blog and include my families journey “Cancer”. That’s another story though, but what I can say is WOW!! Our lives, my life changed in so many ways.

We moved house and life was still challenging in many ways, including the cancer side of it. Not forgetting Covid 19 taking over our lives including putting the world in to lock down. Each day blended into the other and home schooling took over, Including pe with Joe wicks. That first lesson I did with the youngest and I wont ever forget the pain I was in afterwards.

I was still following Marta, but I found myself often ghosting her messages when she mentioned anything about joining her team. However after PE with Joe I thought sod it and took the next step, She added me to a group so I could find out more about the team and what being a mentor was all about.

I watched a live, it sounded amazing but after going away and thinking about it I replied with no! It all sounded to much and not me, I was no wellness individual. I did not even exercise and always failed at growing teams.

I said no for like the 100th time yet I could not stop thinking about it or doing my hubbys head in going on about it. I mentioned the live I had watched and the sample workouts I had been doing from the group I had joined. I mentioned there was another opening and he immediately said go for it!! You want to so do it! The only thing stopping me was me!

I messaged Marta and told her I wanted to go for it, I wanted to take the leap and become a mentor. Within hours I had become part of the team and have not looked back.

It was scary at the start, I wondered if I had done the right thing, but at the same time I was excited. I may not be the best at growing a team, it will take time. This new chapter will not be easy but as long as I can take something from this then that’s what matters.

In the two years I have been a mentor I have grown stronger mentally and physically. I am stepping out of my comfort zone and working on my personal development to grow me as an individual.

Travelling a cancer journey with my family made me truly appreciate each day, that you have no idea what is around the corner and to take that step or two out of your comfort zone. I did that becoming a mentor, and I continue to push myself to grow. Its not always easy, but I would not change it for the world.

I am growing, im learning to believe in myself and im becoming stronger mentally and physically. Im becoming the best me, mum and wellness mentor.
