Why do children have to grow up???
A few weeks ago, my eldest child turned 16 yr and came home with her last ever school report. She applied for college and attended an event at school for sixth form. This was hard enough to get my head around.
Last week it was my eldest sons parents evening, and this week we have a pathways /GCSE evening for him. A Pathways evening is basically an evening that the teachers and headmaster stand at the front of the hall and they talk about the options available for the following two years. Also in our case an evening in that we sit and try to take in information as said child won’t, like many other children their age !! We also try to come to terms with the fact that we have another child that has reached the age they have to think about their future.
This year my hubby has pulled the short straw and gets to go to the evening, as I went a few years ago for Keeley, our eldest who leaves school in the summer. If he wanted to he could really get around not going as he took Keeley a few weeks ago to hers.!!!!!!
Going to the kids school, is always a challenge. This is because you need to try and find your way around. Granted you are always with one child, and yes granted we have been going to said school for nearly 5 years. However this does not count, as the school is massive to a parent. Plus you expect the child to guide you round the school to the part you need to be. Shame that never happens!! It is always left to us parents.
The evening will consist of hubby taking in the information and then asking eldest son questions when back home, which will either gain a response of a mumble if lucky or nothing. This could be ‘Who was that teacher that spoke at the beginning?’ to ‘Have you any idea what options you would like to take?’ I suppose it’s only right that we allow him sometime to think about what he would like to do, I mean it’s not like he has had since the beginning of year 9.
This is an evening that in the back of your mind you are 100% aware you have to go to, but it is an evening you don’t look forward to. It is an evening that you are completely aware that your child will just sit there and take no notice what so ever of what is being said. You will leave the cold school hall late evening with a over flowing mind trying to understand what has been said. Thinking to yourself how you have to then talk to your child about it. In this case as well, I expect hubby will be thinking… oh b***a I have to go and explain this several times to the wife as it will take that many attempts for her to understand!!!
When the evening is over, we as parents have the pleasure of talking to our children and listening to the fears and concerns about their future. It is a honour being a parent, but OMG, when it comes to something so serious like your child future. You can’t help but stand back and thing… OMG!!! When the hell did my boy / girl become so grown up?????
It is so important to make every minute count with your child, some day that minute will be gone.!!
