Father’s Day.
Today is Father’s Day and I’m one of the lucky individuals that can say the words “Happy Fathers day” my daddy is still around but I’m unfortunate though as I’m unable to spend the day with him, we live to far apart and the journey is to much for hubby thanks to the recovery of an ileostomy reversal….. thanks to cancer!!!!!!
I cant spend the day with my dad but I feel lucky as today I’m spending the day with my children, my hubby, my father in law and his partner. For many people they are not as lucky and there are many reasons as to why this could be, death, deployment, separation, the dad may not want nothing to do with the child, distance, illness like cancer, being possibly just a few examples.
On Father’s Day its important to remember that a father/dad is not just someone who is blood related, I believe you have to earn that name or even title. Like many individuals I expect the man that I call dad is not my biological father he is my step dad, this man earned the right to be called dad years ago!! My parents split when I was around 3 years old and my step dad has brought me up since. I did see my biological dad when I was younger but about 13 years ago he stopped talking to me with no explanation. I saw him at my nan’s funereal and he did not even recognise me but recognised my hubby who I was stood next to and then went on to behave like nothing happened, which really hurt. The next time he was to get in contact with me was when roger was going through chemotherapy and this was by text and several years later, I do not class this behaviour as dad behaviour.
My step dad is my dad, he is not very maternal and is rubbish at replying to my messages but that’s him and I would not change that about him. None of this matters because when I need him, he will will be there no questions asked. This man was the one that made me sit at the table for what seemed like hours when I was younger as I had not cleared my plate, sitting there eating a cold Sunday dinner was great!!!! This man took me to my hospital appointments for my teeth and was then there when I passed out visiting one of my his friends. This man was the one that held me when I thought the world had come to an end because I had been dumped. This man holds me when I need to be held and says the most thoughtful words, this man is my dad.
A dad does not have to be blood related or even male, for some their dad is not around so their mum takes on that role. For some like me they may have a step-dad who is the one that brings them up, some may even have two dads. Some individuals may not have their dads as they have passed away. So what ever your circumstances I hope you have had a lovely day and dad I love you always!!
